Trellis v. Lattice: A Palm Beach Classic

Trellis v. Lattice: A Palm Beach Classic

I finally decided to use AI for good (shocking) to educate myself on the difference between lattice and trellis.

Are they interchangeable words? Well….

Bottom line: I’m going to use the French word, treillage, just to sound extra sassy!

For all the nerds:

Lattice: A framework made of thin strips of wood, metal, or vinyl crossed in a diagonal or square grid. It is primarily decorative and used for screens, dividers, or as “skirting” to hide the area under a porch.

Trellis: A more robust, vertical structure specifically designed to support the weight of climbing plants like roses or vines. It can be a standalone feature or attached to a wall.

Treillage: This French term refers to elaborate, high-style architectural trelliswork often found in formal gardens or “garden rooms” indoors, designed to create an illusion of depth (trompe l’oeil).

The more you know!

XOXO
